Build Closet Shelving – How
to make your design
Arranging things in an organized manner inside the home is
considered by many as complex. One or the other day, we all
might have probably helped our moms or wives in household
cleaning. The most common approach is to stuff all the clutter
lying around the house into the closet. In this way, the house
gets clean, but the closet space gets piled up, thereby
providing a clumsy appearance to the entire home. Nobody argues
with that fact that closets are meant to store household items.
Depending on the available space, one can fill the closets with
as much stuff as possible. However, one needs to remember that
the closet space will look more clean, neat and tidy in case
the stuff in the closet is arranged in a more organized manner.
For this, one needs to have a proper planning, a bit of
imagination and slightly innovative. An appropriate solution
for this problem is to build effective closet shelving.
There are certain basic steps that one must follow while
building a closet shelving that is aptly suitable for one’s
needs and requirements. First step begins with creating a
design. Based on this design, one can then prepare a list of
materials required for the construction. This must be followed
by making an approximate estimate about the total expenditure
one needs to spend. Finally, one must head out to buy the
required supplies and materials. Once all the materials are
purchased, one can go ahead with the task of building closet
shelving.
Step 1: Design
Before going ahead with the design, one must compile a list
of things one wants to keep in a closet space. Depending on
this list, one can then proceed for designing. In case there
are lot many numbers of shoes, it is better to have a shoe rack
that is 2-3ft high and runs through the entire length of the
floor. If one has more number of long clothes that must be
hanged, better to provide space for hanging clothes by placing
two bars one above the other. In the same manner, shelves are
required for storing folded clothes. In case the entire
objective is to utilize the space for keeping records or books,
the closet shelving can be designed in such a way that it has
racks of variable sizes and dimensions.
Next part is to measure the dimensions of the available
closet space. One must measure length of each wall and the
space between the walls. All these dimensions must be noted on
a piece of paper and the must be taken into consideration at
the time of creating a design. By making some rough sketches,
one can get a fair estimate about the arrangement of racks,
about the numbers of shelves that can fitted on each wall and
also decide how much space should be provided to each shelf or
rack.
Next part is to determine the type of material to be used in
the construction of closet shelving system. Closet organizers
can be made using a variety of materials such as wire, metal,
laminate, wood, paper board and canvas. While canvas, wire and
paper board are inexpensive options, wood and metal are costly.
Ironically, costlier materials such as wood and metal look more
elegant and can match well with any type of interior home
décor. Depending on the available budget and preference, one
can go for any of the above materials.
Primarily, there are two different ways of building an
organizational closet structure. One method is to use
prefabricated accessories that are available in the market and
assemble them together. These prefabricated hangers and
brackets are made of lightweight materials such as wire and
coated with rubber. These parts are available in a variety of
sizes, dimensions and depths. Also, they can be arranged in any
possible manner so as to suit one’s requirements. The negative
side of this method is that prefabricated wire shelving is not
ideal for holding heavy materials. Another method is to build
the shelving unit all by self. In this case, all the decisions
including the material to be used and the design is customized
and under your control. Depending on the convenience, available
budget, time, space and requirements, one can adopt any of
these methods.
Designing closet shelving as per one’s requirements is not
that difficult. All that is required is proper planning, a bit
of imagination and slightly innovative.
